..yes, Rush called her a slut…your point would be??

So, Rush Limbaugh calls some girl who thinks that I, as a taxpayer, owe her the subsidization of her sex life, a slut. Your point would be? Rush makes a career of being outrageous, of saying things that are over the top. The pretense that this one remark is so noteworthy is pretty laughable to me. Is this another liberal attempt to claim moral superiority in the civility battle? Interestingly, shall we just take a peek at a miniscule sample of the exemplary civil remarks on the mediasphere yesterday with regard to the death of Andrew Breitbart? I don’t care whether you agree with his politics or not, here is a guy who died, leaving behind a wife and 4 kids…

“Is it wrong that I’m happier about that than when they got bin Laden and Saddam?”
“GOOD RIDDANCE..fascist prick”
“Did we cry when Hitler died? No.. #Breitbart see you in hell asshole”
“too good to be true”
“ROT IN HELL ANDREW U BASTARD”

Mmm, mmm. CiVIL.

I wish we lived in a different world. I wish people could still be civil and civilized. I wish we still honored our Constitution and outmoded things like principles and integrity, understood and protected true liberty, respected one another and could listen to and abide peacefully with different viewpoints, and could conduct our business and our government in a virtuous and sane manner. Newsflash — we don’t! Put on your big girl panties, sweetie, it’s a pretty tough and ugly world out there today. I’ve had to. I’m a conservative, a Republican, a Tea Party member, a Christian, and a Mormon. Whoa! Does that give the left lots of hate to sling at me! I’ve been called by members of the tolerant liberal media and Democrat politicians (forget the rabid stuff in the blogosphere…that’s a topic for another day) a slopehead, someone who wears a tin hat, a hatemonger, a terrorist, a demon, and told I can go straight to hell. My faith and what is sacred to me has been mocked and I’ve been caricatured as a deluded imbecile who wears magic underwear (Wonder how that would work out if they tried to characterize Muslims that way and mock what is sacred to them? Just ask Salman Rushdie..if you can find him. Wonder how a Broadway parody of the Qur’an would go over?). That is verbatim and is just a BEGINNING. For loving my country, loving God, trying to be a good neighbor and live the Golden Rule, and believing that a bloated, overgrown and overreaching federal government is destroying our economy and our freedom and needs to be downsized. How obscene and hateful is that?

Please. Save your pretended moral outrage that some college coed was called a slut by Rush Limbaugh for asking for taxpayer funding for her sexual activity. BTW, someone needs to suggest that these guys she’s having sex with need to help foot the bill for contraception. Or give her the number for Planned Parenthood. Or perhaps her local Walgreens. This is a non-issue.

The issue is, freedom. Our government does NOT Constitutionally have the right to coerce in matters of faith and conscience, and if a Catholic institution, or a Muslim institution, or any faith-based institution has moral issues with something, the “separation of church and state” is designed to protect faith and religion from government coercion . And it’s interesting to me too how one-sided this governmental strong-arming has become. Can you see the federal government telling a Muslim based entity that they must allow Jews into leadership positions, for example? Or provide free contraception for single sexually active Muslim young women (woops, for them, the solution to that problem would be honor killing). Good luck.

If this is such a big problem for her and she needs her college to fund her contraception, may I suggest a LONG list of really excellent non-Catholic universities? Or, as mentioned, give her the number for Planned Parenthood, or Medicaid, which we already fund and who provide covered contraceptive services, not to mention a long list of additional local women’s health care clinics and health departments, nationwide. Heck, in a real pinch you can even get the morning after pill online for $40 including next day delivery, $10 off coupon, works up to 5 days after the fact! Isn’t technology amazing. So, no, don’t tell me an additional taxpayer funded and federally mandated Obamacare provision is needed to help poor struggling sexually active coeds.

Not So Common (Anymore) Sense

It’s not rocket science. Just look at human anatomy, and it’s rather obvious who we were designed by nature and by God to pair up with sexually. Then morally we have arrived at some societal consensus as to further restraints on sexual behavior ( And no, “moral” is not a dirty word – all law we have on our books is a reflection of a judgment of “wrong vs. right”, so we “legislate morality” all the time). Recognizing that sex was a means whose end was the survival and vigor of our species, civil man decided, for example, that it was harmful to society as a whole to procreate with your parent, or your sibling. In ancient Anglo Saxon Law, for example, to protect society from the forces most potentially damaging to its survival and viability, the ultimate punishment (death penalty) was reserved for sexual crimes (incest and homosexuality) and those considered to be against God or the King. And for hundreds of years we have held other opinions about the appropriateness of sexual expression, like that we were not intended to have sexual relations with children, or other species, or corpses, or human waste, though many of those proscriptions seem to also be falling out of vogue in the name of license. And shame, rather than the villain the voices of permissiveness make it out to be, served as a guardian of common sense and the protector of society against forces destructive to its physical and moral health and well being.

But in our wild-eyed race to abandon God and any value, principle, or restraint that threatens to “limit our freedom”, we have enshrined sex as one of our newest and most omnipotent gods. No longer a means, sex has become an end, perhaps the most headily compelling and addictively desirable of all ends. Propelled by the momentum of that simple and mistaken substitution we have decided that when it comes to the “brave new” expressway of sexual permissiveness we have seguewayed onto, full speed ahead and “damn the torpedoes.” It’s not enough, either, to tolerate sexual perversion; we must enshrine it. And whereas it’s one thing to tolerate deviant behavior, it’s quite another to sanction and grant it the protection laws are designed to give to the institutions and definitions that protect society as a whole.

Political correctness to the contrary, you can put lipstick on a pig, but… Sexually unnatural behavior, whatever lipstick you try to put on it, is just that, unnatural. It is broken behavior. And the more a society embraces and sanctions broken behavior, the more broken that society becomes. Passion makes a great slave – but the most tyrannical of masters. License, masquerading as liberty, can only reduce true liberty – and in the end it will subsume it. As Plato described the regression from democracy to tyranny, whether within the individual or the society, once the checks of reason and law upon desire are abandoned:
“…the old traditional opinions that he had held from childhood about what is fine or shameful—opinions that are accounted just—are overcome by the opinions, newly released from slavery, that are now the bodyguard of erotic love and hold sway along with it…Now, under the tyranny of erotic love…it lives like a tyrant within him, in complete anarchy and lawlessness as his sole ruler, and drives him, as if he were a city, to dare anything…Isn’t this the life that a tyrannical man leads?” When we abandon God’s law, and nature’s law, we can be pretty certain they will abandon us. The society where anything goes….goes.

Economic recovery

Our president is touting his success at the “economic recovery” we are experiencing. Couple problems with that. It’s really unfortunate that people have become so disconnected with reality and with evidence and totally unable to do their due diligence in fact checking; heaven knows the media certainly won’t do it for us.

First, we have experienced 10 post-World War II recessions in this country. We have recovered from all of them, without the help of mega stimulus infusions. In fact, the bigger the bust, the bigger the boom (and vice versa). Economies continually cycle between boom and bust, thanks to the Keynesian model we’re operating under (“we’re all Keynesians now..”). And for every down, there is an up. That’s just what they do. The most vigorous recoveries have taken place under presidents, whether Democrat or Republican, who recognized the formula for economic health is NOT more government intervention.

Quiz: What president said: “It is a paradoxical truth that tax rates are too high today and tax revenues are too low, and the soundest way to raise the revenues in the long run is to cut the rates now…The purpose of cutting taxes now is not to incur a budget deficit, but to achive the more prosperous, expanding economy which can bring a budget surplus.” (a) Ronald Reagan (b) Bill Clinton (c) John F. Kennedy (d) George W. Bush

Why can’t politicians in Washington learn anything from this? At no time has a recession anywhere near the magnitude of the recent one been followed by as anemic a “recovery” period. That is due to government policy. Current policies are hindering our recovery, not to be credited for it. Our President tells Congress not to “muck it up”; the best way they could do that is refuse to sign any more of his bad checks. Nothing could be worse for an economy than the current debt/deficit/big government spending model – again, don’t take my word for it, look at Japan.

After WWII it enjoyed an exemplary thriving economy. In response to the slump of the 1980’s, they started applying a prescription of debt-financed binge spending and government “stimulus” – for two decades? Hello??? Today their debt equals 200%+ of GDP and their low-to-no growth economy continues to stagnate. Recovery? I don’t think so. More like government-induced chronic disability. Look and learn, please, Washington!!! Politicians keep claiming, well, it hasn’t worked well enough BECAUSE we haven’t spent quite enough money. Before you keep spending my great-great-granchildren’s inheritance, I want some proof. Show me one – just one instance, where an economy boomed with such an unsustainable, not to mention “irresponsible and unpatriotic” (thank you, President Obama for that characterization) financial prescription? I’ll show you plenty where the opposite tack WORKED.

Second problem is employment statistics. I can’t get excited about an unemployment level that has stayed above 8% for all three years of our current administration. The only “progress” they cite is due, which the media neglects to tell us, to creative statistical manipulation deriving from the fact that over 3 million people have been dropped from their inclusion and been added to the long term unemployed, translated, they have given up looking for work.

Wake up, America. We have got to get informed and refuse to be manipulated and “bamboozled”. As Lord Keynes himself admitted, it is much more difficult to “unbamboozle” once the deed is done.
(Oh, the answer to the quiz? c.)

The nature of the Beeste

Am feeling a little overwhelmed this morning – so what else is new?? I always seem to get overwhelmed about something. That’s my major issue..but more on that another time.

New dogs! Two at once – kind of like twins, I guess. South African Boerboels. They are a magnificent breed of dog, but boy are they a LOT of DOG!!! The male (the Beeste!) is almost 3 – what a BIG guy. The female is a puppy, 8 weeks. I remember now when, 17 years ago, we had our last puppy in the house – after cleaning up the umpteenth mess I swore I would never again have a dog in the house. Kind of like childbirth. We forget, fortunately for the future of the human race. Now I’m remembering why I said that!

And the big guy has declared war on our two cats, at least I’m sure that’s how they perceive it. They run from him, and he thinks, what fun! And chases them. So they run and arch and spit and climb trees….I need to try to make peace between them. I found online (of course – what can’t you find on line these days!) a formula for this existing cat/new dog peace process, and it’s (sigh) a lot of work. A good deal of my feeling of overwhelm. First, I’m gonna have to take the Beeste to obedience school. His last owner said when he bought him at one year of age he was in South Africa. So he speaks Afrikaans. And obeys commands in Afrikaans. But we don’t. Speak it, I mean.

Important to establish dominance over these big guys from the get go or they will run all over you. He’s really quite good, but boy, when you’re dealing with 160 pounds of dog that wants to play with you, or jump in your lap, you better know who’s top dog! And heaven forbid he decides he really doesn’t respect you and what you’re asking and refuses to cooperate?

I’m thinking, maybe this is kind of like diplomacy??
(This is not to deny my previous posts – remember I don’t hate my dogs, I love them…) You don’t have to lose your temper, but you do have to draw the line and very firmly stick to it – the day you let the other guy know he can push you around, your days as a player are numbered. We need to excise this “new” national identity that seems to feel we are such an arrogant, messed up, split up, hypocritical mess that we have/are nothing worth defending or preserving or taking pride in anymore. It will destroy us, both from within and from without. I’m afraid our country has become so wrapped up in the politically correct wave of being an all inclusive, diversity embracing, tradition eschewing “nice guy”, apologizing for ourselves and backing down all around, that we are heading for some very serious beastly problems indeed.

I have always hated Donald Trump (and his hair!) but maybe a President Trump wouldn’t be such a bad idea at this juncture?? He knows how to fight with the dogs – and win. We certainly need someone who can restore us to alpha. The best defense is a good defense? I don’t want to bequeath my children the Divided States of the New World Order. That’s not arrogance; that’s just survival on this Animal Farm that many want to deny we’re living in. “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others….” But just ask our men and women on the front lines, around the world…they’ll tell it like it is. It’s a dog eat dog world out there.

We are all on the same team

In a recent talk given to the Priesthood session of our Church’s General Conference, Dieter Uchtdorf, one of our Church leaders, gave an awesome talk on the sin of pride. I offer the following excerpt it as SO applicable to our current situation in this country, and food for thought for all….

“Pride is the sin of self-elevation….it always seems to end with ‘…I am better than you’…..Perhaps there is no better laboratory to obseve the sin of pride than the world of sports. I have always loved participating in and attending sporting events. But I confess there are times when the lack of civility in sports is embarrassing. How is it that normally kind and compassionate human beings can be so intolerant and filled with hatred toward an opposing team and its fans? I have watched sports fans vilify and demonize their rivals. They look for any flaw and magnifty it. They justifiy their hatred with broad generalizations and apply them to everyone associated with the other team. When ill fortune afflicts their rival, they rejoice. (Now, anyone want to guess where this is headed??)

Brethren (though this applies to all of us…), unfortunately we see today too often the same kind of spill over into the public discourse of politics, enthnicity, and religion. My dear brethren of the presthood, my beloved fellow disciples of the gentle Christ, should we not hold ourselves to a higher standard? (And I would offer, should we not as American citizens hold ourselves to a higher standard?) As priesthood bearers, we must realize that ALL OF GOD’S CHILDREN WEAR THE SAME JERSEY. OUR TEAM IS THE BROTHERHOOD OF MAN. This life is our playing field. Our goal is to learn to love God and to extend that same love toward our fellowman….We are here to build, uplift, treat fairly, and encourage all of Heavenly Father’s children. (Regardless of ethnicity, religion, political party or persuasion, or personal lifestyle choices.)

Tragedy in Tucson

I am a conservative Republican who voted against Giffords both times and would vote against her again. But when I heard the news about this I cried and my heart ached for her – I have the utmost respect for her as a person and as a dedicated, sincere, hard working public servant who truly believes she is doing what is best for the country. She is definitely in our family’s hearts and prayers, as are all those affected by this horrid tragedy. Though largely wrong in his assignation blame, Dupnik is right in one sense – we do have to wake up and smell the coffee – you reap what you sow and we have of late become such habitual sowers of hate in this country over everything in general and politics in particular, that we are in for a very bitter harvest indeed if we don’t stem the flow of anger and hatred and relearn some civility and cooperation. No position or plank has the capacity to do as much good for our land as the acrimony with which we’ve been battling each other has the capacity to harm and destroy us. Does anyone out there care? Or have politicians -and people – become so enslaved to ideology they have totally lost sight of the greater good??

Obviously I am not the only meditator here since notthenetwork was taken and I had to add the “10”. It’s just a reference to the fact that I need to remind myself constantly when unwelcome thoughts threaten to sweep me away that they are just a network and not “ME!” Need to stay aware and mindful.
